If you want to start right out drawing a car and getting a feel for the shapes and how shading works, try tracing a picture of a car and shading it in. You will start to get an idea of what to expect of the finished product, but you still have to learn how to layout the body from the very beginning so you can make your own.

Drawing your own car involves laying out basic the shapes for the body and wheels. You need to have an understanding of perspective so you can add dimension to the car. And get an understanding of how light plays on the car so you know which areas are darker than others, as if the light is shining on it from a particular angle.

Having a good set of pencils is important, get a variety of different hardness’s. This will allow you to draw from very light to very dark. A good light source so you can see what you are doing would be nice. Sometimes two lights from two angles makes it better. Don’t try to draw on a shaky table, use one that is solid so it will not move around on you.

Being able to draw cars as realistic as possible is a pretty cool thing to do. Getting the skills to do it are not that difficult either. If you have a good book that is specifically geared toward drawing cars you can be up and running pretty quick. To draw a car with some dimension to it you will have to learn about perspective. Drawing in perspective gives the illusion of being two or three dimensional instead of being a flat object. To help with getting all the parts of the car sized correctly you can make a grid on your paper to work off of.

Learning how to do shading on the car and even the surrounding area will give more realism and help make the car jump off the paper. When you get more confident you can start learning color and how to apply it to your drawings. Water color and markers are popular mediums to use for this.

Other tools you need are a few drawing pencils in different hardness’s so you can draw dark and light shades. You need a steady surface to draw on so you can concentrate on drawing not on keeping your table from rocking. Get a good light to shine onto your drawing surface without putting your paper in a shadow.

Drawing Cars in 3D view by hand is very, very tricky but using my Step by Step EZ Draw Tutorial may just make it a little easier to do. Remember this is a CARTOON CAR, so you don’t have to focus on drawing every single detail and being 100% accurate. It’s about having fun drawing, not trying to win a Grammy Award.
